It is a very large square piano typical of those made in the United States in the last third of the 19th century. American makers continued to produce squares long after European makers had abandoned them in favor of uprights. WebBut what has turned out to be his most important patent-what set the foundation for many of the Steinways' contributions toward building a more powerful and stronger piano-was granted to him on December 20, 1859 (no. 26,532-fig. 13). This invention claimed a new arrange ment of strings for grand pianos in which the strings are in two tiers.
