The downside to the sm7b is that it needs a lot of gain to get that flavor.

WebSM7 hype mostly originates from USA where MD441, M88 and other nice European dynamic mics aren't as well known and SM7B is cheaper than e.g. RE20. The fact that it was used for the most sucessful record ever also helps. IMO MD441 and RE20 sound better in 99% of cases. SM7B isn't as directional as some people think.
